Airport Transfers & Facilities

Connecting to Gaspé

  • Most international travelers fly to Montreal (YUL) or Quebec City (YQB).
  • From there, connect via regional flight to Gaspé (YGP) or Mont-Joli (YYY).
  • Alternatively, rent a car at the major airport and begin a scenic drive.
  • Seasonal flight availability affects frequency and prices.

Airport Facilities

  • Regional airports have limited facilities (basic waiting areas, car rental).
  • Major international airports (YUL, YQB) offer full services: restaurants, shops, currency exchange.
  • Taxis and rental cars are main transfer methods at regional airports.
  • Montreal (YUL): 747 Express bus to downtown. Quebec City (YQB): public bus service.

Land Transportation

Popular crossings: Derby Line/Stanstead, Champlain/Lacolle. Valid passports for all travelers. Be ready to answer questions about visit purpose, duration, and goods. For visa application assistance, visit IVisa or VisaHQ.

Train Services

VIA Rail Canada passenger service beyond Matapédia has been suspended. Train travel within the peninsula is not feasible for direct transport. Consult viarail.ca for updates. For flight compensation, AirHelp might assist.

Long-Distance Buses

Intercar (Intercar.ca) is the main bus provider, connecting towns. Service frequency is limited (1-2 departures/day). Plan itineraries carefully around schedules.

Self-Driving & Road Conditions

Driving Requirements

A rental car is highly suggested for flexibility. It allows access to scenic viewpoints and remote areas.

Items

  • Valid driver's license from home country.
  • International Driving Permit (IDP) if license is not in English/French.
  • Major credit card for rental deposit.

Road Conditions & Safety

Roads are generally well-maintained. Quebec Route 132 forms a paved loop. Be vigilant for wildlife.

Important Notes

  • Watch for moose, deer, and occasional bears, especially at dawn/dusk.
  • Winter driving (Nov-Apr): heavy snow/ice. Winter tires mandatory (Dec 1-Mar 15).
  • Some secondary roads may be unpaved gravel. Drive carefully on these.

Sea/River Arrivals

Sea and river transportation offer unique ways to approach or depart the Gaspé Peninsula, connecting it to other parts of Eastern Canada.

Ferry Services

  • Matane to Quebec's North Shore (Baie-Comeau, Godbout) via STQ ferry.
  • CTMA ferry from Souris, PEI, to Cap-aux-Meules, Îles de la Madeleine (not direct to Gaspé).
  • Crossing can offer marine wildlife viewing.

Departure Information

Various taxes and fees, like airport improvement fees and security surcharges, are typically included in airfare. No separate fees upon departure.

Departure Timing

  • International flights from YUL/YQB: arrive 2-3 hours before departure.
  • Regional flights from YGP/YYY: 1-2 hours before departure.
  • Factor in potential traffic and adverse weather conditions.

Special Notes

  • River transportation within the peninsula is mainly for recreation.
  • No widespread "boat taxi" system for general transport.
  • Cruise ports are occasional calls, not common for independent arrivals.
  • Motorcycle/scooter rentals are very limited.
