Getting There & Away

The Northeast, Brazil

Air Travel

Airport Information

São Luís is served by Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport (SLZ), approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the city center.

Flights & Connections

  • Major Brazilian airlines: LATAM, GOL, and Azul.
  • No direct international flights. Connect via major Brazilian hubs: São Paulo (GRU), Rio de Janeiro (GIG), Brasília (BSB), Fortaleza (FOR), Recife (REC).
  • Seasonal prices: Frequently higher during Brazilian holidays and festivals (July, December, January, June). Book well in advance.

Airport Facilities & Transfers

SLZ is a regional airport with basic facilities.

Arrival & Departure

  • Facilities: ATMs, car rental desks, snack bars, small shops, Wi-Fi (variable quality).
  • Taxis: Available outside terminal, R$ 50-80 to city center. Agree on fare or use meter.
  • Ride-sharing Apps: Uber and 99 have more affordable rates. Follow signs to pick-up points.

Train Connections

The Carajás Railway runs through São Luís, mainly for cargo. It has passenger service (Executivo, Econômica) connecting to mining regions in Pará state. Book tickets in advance.

Long-Distance Buses

São Luís has a main bus terminal (Rodoviária de São Luís). Reputable companies like Guanabara, Expresso Guanabara, and Satélite Norte operate routes to Fortaleza, Teresina, Belém, Recife, and Brasília.

Self-Driving & Rental

Major car rental companies (Localiza, Unidas, Movida, Hertz, Avis) have offices at SLZ. Needs a valid home driver's license and strongly an International Driving Permit (IDP). Minimum age 21/25 with credit card.

Driving Conditions & Safety

Road Quality & Traffic

  • Road conditions vary. Main avenues within the city are generally paved, but potholes and uneven surfaces occur.
  • Driving in the historic center of São Luís presents challenges due to narrow, cobblestone streets, limited parking, and heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • Traffic outside the center, especially during rush hours, can be heavy.

Driving Laws & Night Driving

  • Brazil uses the right side for driving. Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants. Drunk driving laws are strict, with a zero-tolerance policy.
  • Driving at night on intercity roads is not recommended due to poor lighting, unmarked obstacles (like animals or unlit vehicles), and potential safety concerns in remote areas.
  • Use a GPS or navigation app (like Google Maps or Waze) for routing.

Parking & Other Considerations

Parking

Parking in the historic center is difficult and limited. Seek paid parking lots (Estacionamento) for security. On-street parking may need payment via a "blue zone" (Zona azul) system (purchase ticket from street vendors).

Motorcycle & Scooter Rentals

Less common for tourists. While some local shops might offer them, they frequently have higher safety risks due to traffic conditions, road quality, and potentially less reliable maintenance. Not generally recommended.

Bicycle Sharing

São Luís does not have a widespread city-wide bicycle sharing program. Some hotels or tour operators might offer bicycle rentals for local use, especially for leisure rides along coastal avenues.

Sea & River Arrivals

Ferry Services

The most relevant sea travel for tourists is the ferry service connecting São Luís to Alcântara, a historic town across the São Marcos Bay.

Alcântara Ferry Details

  • Passenger Ferry: Departs from Cais da Praia Grande in São Luís's city center. The trip takes about 1.5 hours. A convenient option for tourists.
  • Vehicle Ferry: Departs from the Terminal da Ponta da Espera in São Luís to Cujupe terminal near Alcântara. Mainly for vehicles and a longer journey.
  • Cruise Ships: São Luís is not a major port for international cruise ships.

River Transportation & Connections

Tourist-focused river transportation is limited within São Luís itself.

Local Waterways & Transit

  • Rivers feeding the bay mainly serve local communities and fishing activities. Organized boat tours might be available for specific excursions around the bay or through mangroves.
  • Immigration Procedures: Not applicable for typical tourist entries, as major international sea arrivals are uncommon. For the ferry to Alcântara, it is domestic travel.
  • Connections to Land Transport: Upon arrival at Alcântara's ferry terminal, local transport (vans, taxis) is readily available. São Luís ferry terminals are accessible by local buses or taxis/ride-sharing apps.

Exit Fees & Taxes

Brazil does not charge specific exit fees or taxes to departing international tourists at its airports beyond what is typically included in the airfare. Review your flight ticket details to confirm all fees are covered.

Departure Procedures

For domestic flights from SLZ, arrive approximately 1.5 to 2 hours before scheduled departure. For international connections, allow 2-3 hours at your transfer airport for re-checking luggage and international departure procedures.

Online Check-in

Check in online for your flights whenever possible. This spares time at the airport and simplifies your departure process. Confirm your flight or bus schedule the day before departure.

Airport/Station Facilities

SLZ Airport

Marechal Cunha Machado International Airport (SLZ) has basic amenities for departing travelers.

Departure Services

  • Check-in counters available.
  • Security screening points.
  • A few dining and shopping options (often limited) post-security.

Bus Terminal

The main bus terminal (Rodoviária de São Luís) operates as a hub for long-distance bus travel.

Terminal Services

  • Waiting areas for passengers.
  • Snack bars and convenience shops.
  • Ticket counters for various bus companies.

Departure Timing Considerations

Domestic Flights

For flights from SLZ, it is good to arrive approximately 1.5 to 2 hours before your scheduled departure time.

International Connections

If connecting through another Brazilian city (e.g., São Paulo, Rio), allow a 2-3 hour buffer at your transfer airport for re-checking luggage and international procedures.

Bus Departures

Arrive at the bus terminal at least 30-45 minutes before your bus departure to find your gate and board comfortably.

Departure Planning Tip

Confirm your flight or bus schedule the day before departure. Traffic to the airport or bus terminal can be heavy during rush hours, so plan your transit time accordingly.
