Local Transit

Curacao, Aruba Bonaire And Curacao

Transit Systems

Konvooi Buses (Large Public Buses): ABC Busbedrijf operates these large yellow buses on fixed routes. They link Willemstad with major neighborhoods and further destinations like Westpunt or the airport. They offer reliable but sometimes infrequent service, especially on weekends or evenings. Their routes cover the main arteries of the island.

Minibuses/Colectivos: These are smaller vans, often white, with "BUS" written on their license plate. They operate on more flexible routes, often mirroring the Konvooi routes. They can also deviate slightly to drop off passengers. You can flag them down anywhere along their route.

Service Advantages

  • Minibuses generally bring faster and more frequent service than the larger buses, specifically on popular routes.
  • Konvooi buses operate from early morning (around 5:30 AM) until late evening (around 11 PM), though frequency decreases after rush hour and on weekends.
  • Minibuses generally operate longer hours and bring more frequent service, providing greater flexibility.
  • Public buses, especially minibuses, are generally not wheelchair accessible due to steps and crowded conditions.

Routes & Hubs

The main bus terminal sits in Otrobanda, near the Queen Emma Bridge. Konvooi routes hold a structured schedule; minibus routes are less formal.

Fares & Payment

Fares for both bus types receive payment in cash directly to the driver. Netherlands Antillean Guilders (ANG) or US Dollars are usable. Fares are inexpensive.

Efficient Navigation

If a route is unclear, ask the driver. Flag down minibuses. Carry small bills. Confirm your destination with the driver. Patience is good for public transport schedules.

Taxis & Ride-Sharing

Licensed Taxis
  • Licensed taxis typically have "TX" on their license plates and are usually white or yellow.
  • Fares are fixed between popular destinations; agreement on the fare with the driver before beginning avoids misunderstandings.
  • Major international ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft do not operate in Curacao. Local taxi apps exist but are not widely used.
Fares & Safety
  • Fares from Hato International Airport to Willemstad typically cost US$30-US$40. Short rides within Willemstad may cost US$10-US$20.
  • Payment is usually in cash (ANG or USD); cash is more reliable than cards.
  • Licensed taxis are generally safe. For solo travelers at night, calling a reputable taxi company or arranging through your hotel is good.

Vehicle Rentals

Car Rental

Age 21+ for car rental. Valid home country driver's license fine for 90 days. A credit card for deposit is necessary. Pre-booking is good.

Motorcycles & Scooters

Available but less common. Not good for inexperienced riders due to road conditions.

Bicycles

No widespread sharing programs. Rentals exist from hotels/tour operators. Good for leisure cycling, not urban commuting.

Driving Rules

Drive on the right. Seatbelts mandatory. Speed limits 45-80 km/h. Main roads are generally good; some secondary roads are rough. Note speed bumps.

Foot & Cycle Paths

Willemstad's historic core is a delight to explore on foot, for close appreciation of its unique architecture.

Pedestrian Areas

  • Willemstad's historic districts (Punda, Otrobanda) are highly walkable and best explored on foot.
  • The Handelskade waterfront is ideal for strolling, especially in the late afternoon or evening.
  • Pietermaai, with its beautifully restored buildings, also has a very walkable area filled with restaurants and shops.
  • Numerous guided walking tours are available, starting from central points. Self-guided tours are simple to manage with a map or app.

Cycling & Safety Notes

  • Curacao has no extensive bicycle infrastructure or dedicated bike lanes in Willemstad.
  • Cycling is more recreational, often done on quieter roads or mountain biking trails.
  • Roads within Willemstad can be narrow and busy, so caution is good for urban cycling.
  • If cycling, wearing a Helmet and using reflective gear, especially at dawn or dusk, is good.

Areas to Note

  • Avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit or deserted areas, especially outside main tourist zones.
  • Certain parts of Scharloo, while having interesting street art during the day, can feel less safe at night; exploring this area during daylight hours is best.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
  • Willemstad has no cable cars or funiculars. The free pedestrian ferry across St. Anna Bay is the most unique local transport experience.
  • Accessibility infrastructure in Willemstad holds limitations, especially in historic areas. Newer resorts are more likely to be wheelchair-accessible.
  • Contacting specific hotels or tour operators in advance for their accessibility features is good.

Unique Transport

Tour Buses

Various tour operators bring guided bus tours of Willemstad and the island's highlights. These offer convenience for seeing multiple attractions without independent navigation.

Boat Taxis

A small, free pedestrian ferry operates across St. Anna Bay, linking Punda and Otrobanda when the Queen Emma Bridge swings open. This offers a quick and scenic way to cross.

Boat Excursions

Boat excursions to snorkeling/diving sites and islands like Klein Curacao are popular. These are typically organized tours, not regular public transportation.

Explore Further

Consider acquiring a Curacao travel map. It can prove good for navigation, specifically if you plan to explore beyond Willemstad's immediate vicinity.
